Train. Test. Refine.
Students are encouraged to come to class with something they are actively working on. Classes give them opportunities to learn, test, and refine those skills instead of simply collecting techniques.
About the club
Mission Grappling Club is a Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling academy in San Marcos, CA for kids, teens, and adults. Whether you are stepping onto the mat for the first time or training to compete, our goal is to provide thoughtful coaching, challenging training, and a place you want to keep coming back to.

Training with a purpose
People tend to improve faster when they know what they’re working on. Our classes, coaching, and tools are designed to help students train with specific goals, understand their progress, and take an active role in getting better.
There’s no single reason to train and no single way to get better. Some people want to compete, some want to get stronger or more confident, and others simply enjoy learning Jiu-Jitsu. Whatever brings you to the mat, having something to work toward gives your training purpose.

Our app helps beginners and intermediate students research positions and techniques, find topics to study, and become more independent learners.
The ranking section in our app helps students understand their progress and what they are working toward.
Students can review training footage to study what actually happened during their rounds, identify patterns, and decide what to work on next.

Some of the smaller decisions at Mission are intentional parts of how we want the gym to operate.
A promotion should recognize progress, not create another charge. We do not charge students for belts.
During kids’ Jiu-Jitsu classes, our pairing system matches students with training partners based on skill and experience, with pairings displayed right on the training room screen. It creates more appropriate rounds and helps make sure every student has a partner and is included in training.
Our class clock creates structure without making training rigid. Coaches are accountable for using class time well, and students know when it is time to learn, drill, and train.
Our kids open mat gives young athletes room to train, experiment, and enjoy grappling without parents coaching from the sidelines. The goal is a positive environment where kids can learn to navigate training for themselves.
We chose white mats because you can see when they need to be cleaned. They keep us accountable for maintaining the kind of training space we want our students practicing in.

Coaches
Head coach Adam Schmaltz has more than 20 years of coaching experience, is a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, and has a background in kinesiology, motor learning, and youth development. As a father of three, he also understands that people learn differently at different ages and stages.
That experience helps shape our approach, but there isn’t only one way to teach or learn. Our coaching team brings together traditional and modern approaches to grappling, giving students exposure to different perspectives while keeping the focus on purposeful training and continued progress.

The gym
Mission Grappling Club is a place to train seriously without taking yourself too seriously. We offer Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling for kids, teens, and adults, with training for everyone from complete beginners to experienced competitors.
New to grappling? You don’t need to be in shape, know Jiu-Jitsu, or own a gi before you start. Our Fundamentals class gives beginners a dedicated place to learn the basics and get comfortable on the mat.
Clear technical instruction
Focused drilling and positional work
Live training with resistance
Coaching for every experience level

The easiest way to understand how we train is to get on the mat.
